My First (and Worst) Vacation

Updated: Aug 22, 2021

So to give a little backstory, my mom has gone to Cancún, Mexico like 4 different times and would ALWAYS come back raving about how beautiful the city is, how clear the water is, how fun the activities are, yadda yadda yadda. Me not having any travel experience (my first cruise doesn’t count because I was fairly young and can't remember it) is like “that sounds so fun! I want to go!!!” So when I graduated from high school in 2015, my mom decided to take me on a senior trip to Cancún as a graduation gift. Of course I am super excited for vacation and to experience this bathtub clear water that my mom has been obsessing over for years.

The day came for my mom and I to leave so we headed to the airport super excited. The flight wasn’t long but for some reason, while on the plane, my mom’s foot became irritated. By the time we landed, her foot was feeling pretty uncomfortable, which sucked. But although certain activities may no longer be doable (like snorkeling), we assumed our time would still be well spent. Little did we know, our time checking into the hotel and the 10 minutes spent on the beach immediately after would be the only time we had to experience any sun and fun before everything went south.

Not long after we got into our room, it started raining pretty badly. It sucked but I was hopeful that it would not rain the whole time and that we would still have a blast on vacation. Instead, we ended up stuck in our room for the entirety of the trip as it not only rained consistently, but literally flooded. I’m talking about a good 4+ inches of water depending on where we went! We mainly left only to get food from the main part of the hotel, which required us to get wet while walking across an open walkway. And what made it even worse was that our hotel did not have many activities. We watched a magic show one day and that was about it.

At some point, we decided enough was enough and that we should make the best of our situation and head to the mall. The mall was literally like a 5 minute walk away but between the rain and flooded streets, we were not getting very far. We called a cab to drive us across but that was a fail. Please tell me why the cab drove through the water for a few minutes, needed to make a U-turn, and literally GAVE UP!!! He told us that he couldn’t finish the drive because of the water and that we needed to get out and walk!!!!! I’m pretty sure we could still see the hotel from where we were because we got nowhere.

So fine, we walk to the mall just to have something to do for a while. When we got there, we realized it was an OPEN AIR MALL, meaning the ceilings were not closed. So we ended up walking the mall with freaking umbrellas! That made the experience even worse. I was so over it. The one activity we tried to do (that should have been so simple) didn’t even work out.

By the time we got home, I was thoroughly unimpressed. This place my mom had been sooo excited for all these years turned out to be a major flop. The rain and flooding put a big damper on all of our plans and to be honest, if it hadn’t rained, my mom’s foot irritation may have still been problematic. I did not get to relax on the beach, swim in the crystal clear water, or experience any of the amazing-ness Cancún supposedly had to offer.

Up until this year, Mexico had a bad place in my heart. Every time I see pictures from the trip, I get so irritated. My mom had been trying so hard to get me to give Mexico another chance but I was not feeling it. I even told her the only way I saw myself visiting Mexico again was if it was yeeeaarrrss from now and someone invited me or if it happened to be a stop on a multi-destination cruise. I have too many places on my bucket list to waste money going back to a country that did me dirty! However, as you can see from my first blog, I did end up going back this year and had a much better time. I was side-eyeing Mexico though because when I checked the weather before we left, it said it would be raining the whole time. In my head, I’m like “Not again! Ain’t nobody got time for that!” Thankfully, it rained off and on instead so there were dry moments (and no flooding to ruin this trip). So Mexico redeemed itself this year a bit. I’m still not sure if I see myself going back any time soon but I definitely have better memories now, just in case.
